Zyloric is widely used in the treatment of hyperuricemia and chronic gout. Its mechanism of action is lowering the body`s production of uric acid. If excess amounts of uric acid accumulate inside the body, disorders such as kidney stones or gout are possible. Zyloric works on purine catabolism and blocks the action of xanthine oxidase, an enzyme which contributes to the production of uric acid. The result of this is that uric acid levels are reduced, allowing it to prevent gout attacks. Some patients have also been treated for tumor lysis syndrome with this medicine.

Zyloric comes in the form of 100 mg strength tablets for oral administration. Your physician will calculate the dosage. Adults treating gout may be told by their physician to start with 100 mg per day, and this may be increased for maintenance treatment. Patients affected by calcium oxalate calculi are generally directed to begin with 200 mg to 300 mg (the exact amount will be decided by the physician). In cases of other conditions being treated, the individual dosage may vary. Patients are required to strictly comply with the dosage instructions provided by their physician.

Treatment of high uric acid levels or any other conditions with Zyloric may result in side effects. You must report all reactions to your physician. Examples can include: reduced libido, drowsy feeling, nasal congestion, nausea and sickness, taste sensation changes.

In addition to mild reactions, patients being treated with Zyloric may be affected by symptoms which are serious (however this is normally believed to occur less often). It will be necessary to go to the hospital straight away for medical care if you suffer from soreness when urinating, decreases in body weight, bruises or any other serious side effects that have not been mentioned here.

Patients are usually instructed not to commence treatment with Zyloric if they are affected by an ongoing acute gout attack, due to the risk of it worsening the symptoms. Instead, the physician may instruct them to wait until the attack is over.

Regular blood tests and medical checkups may be requested by your physician during treatment to ensure that Zyloric is not affecting the blood cells or causing any other reactions.
