Acamprol is used to treat patients addicted to alcohol. If the patient has stopped drinking, it may reduce cravings to consume alcoholic beverages. In addition to this, Acamprol can help to restore the normal brain function in patients who may have drank large quantities of alcohol over an extended period of time. Doctors believe it works by acting on neurotransmitters in the brain to increase the inhibitory effects of these natural chemicals, while also acting on amino acids to help reduce the patient's cravings for alcohol.

If you are affected by alcoholism, it is necessary to note that Acamprol must be used alongside counselling, in order to properly treat alcohol addiction. The most commonly prescribed dosage is 2 pills taken 3 times per day. Take each dose with food. Treatment normally commences as soon as the patient has ceased drinking, and will normally last for 1 year. If alcohol is consumed again, you should continue taking the medicine, but it is necessary to tell your doctor about this.

Treating alcoholism with Acamprol may cause some side effects, including: impotence, cold symptoms, memory problems, appetite reduction, perspiration and mild skin reactions.

When taking Acamprol, you are advised to report all side effects you notice to your doctor. In rare cases, serious side effects may occur.

Immediate medical attention is required if you notice severe changes in mood, hallucinations, feeling thirsty or any other symptoms of a severe reaction.

Patients need to note that taking Acamprol on its own will not cure alcoholism.  Acamprol can help to reduce the desire to consume alcoholic beverages, and together with counseling, it can greatly increase the likelihood of successful treatment for alcoholism.

Taking Acamprol will not treat the withdrawal symptoms from alcohol. Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.
